Profile of the Course

The M.A. course in Islamic Art and Archaeology teaches an overview of the material and relevant scholarly methods of this field. It includes optional training in one of the principal languages of the Islamic Middle East (Arabic, Persian, Turkish). The holdings of the University Museum (Bumiller Collection) are used for exercises in techniques of documentation and analysis. In the practice module, students gather experience in museum work, in field research (e. g. archaeological excavation) and in studying originals on trips to sites and museums. By studying a particular field in more depth for their M.A. thesis, students develop their own focus of research.
